Live Integrity Church

Integrity Church is a local church in Greenville, N.C. We exist to know Jesus and to make Him known to the city of Greenville and to the remote places of the world. This is our church blog where we hope to accomplish several objectives. We hope to host relevant and ongoing discussions about how the scriptures interact with relevant cultural topics. We want to wrestle through life challenges and hopefully challenges you can relate with. Either way, this blog is intended to be a living and breathing document chronicling the lives of us here at Integrity Church as we strive to know Christ and to make Him known.

thing that becomes absolutely certain; I'm riddled with sin. I know what you're
thinking, "I'm glad he has realized that". Before you stop reading,
let me clarify. It is one thing to be able to say that you are sinful; it is
quite another to have your heart truly believe it. There is nothing like being
humbled by the scriptures to realize that one has absolutely zero chance of
becoming a son of the King apart from the redemptive work of Christ. I realize
this post is long, but lets be honest, there just isn't any way to silver spoon
significant and life altering truths of Scripture. To learn, I have always had
to dig. I'll simply start the digging for you, but there is much more digging
to be done. Also, I want to say that I am a student as well. I humbly submit my
thoughts to you and I do think they are in accordance with scripture. However,
I leave room for error and correction as God gives me understanding.

good works) not as a response to a gracious God from a heart that longs to obey

love God with ALL your heart, soul, mind and strength should have a deeper
impact on us than just simply burning a sacrifice. This man seems to see that
Jesus cares about receiving authentic Worship from us, not just lip-service or
routine actions. Jesus seems to commend this man for seeing the difference and
realizing that Idolatry is a worship issue; it is the worship of something

only question is who or what god will you worship? For a believer in Christ,
Jesus alone is
our Savior. He alone can save us. If we truly worship Him above all other gods,
then we have our love, stability and significance in Jesus and not in other gods. We don't need
'functional saviors' because we have the real savior in Jesus. We can cast our
fears on Him. Psalm 55:22 says, "Cast

When our heart worships Jesus and we are no longer worshipping things, people,

closing, I think it is important to see our idolatry as God sees it. How wicked
would it be to prefer a photograph of your spouse to having the real flesh and

that a photograph or an idea of him/her is what you truly love? How wicked
would it be to honor the achievements and architecture at the hands of men and
malign the beauty of all creation at the hands of the one true God? How wicked
would it be to worship something created (things, people, places, emotions) by
God rather than God himself? God paints this idea beautifully in Isaiah
40:18-26,

How an Idea Becomes a Reality

As Integrity Church grows, my desire is that it's current and rising leaders would not only have great Christ-honoring ideas but also have the ability to implement their ideas and bring them to reality.

I recently found this article by Mark Driscoll. In the article he describes a process a leader can use to effectively make his or her idea into a reality. When you are planning for any type of project, it's important to ask your idea questions. You would be surprised how much more effective you'll be when you take the time to answer as many questions about your idea before you actually launch it.

I thought I'd share this process in hopes the leaders of Integrity Church would take the time to plan, prepare and see their good ideas to reality.

Change. Every leader wants it. And some are more effective at making it happen. In addition to God's grace, the following process has proven invaluable to me, as I have consciously used it for over a decade. I offer it in hopes of serving those who serve others.

Vision

At this phase, an idea emerges that seems worthwhile but the following questions need to be answered in order to determine its viability. In answering these questions, the input of the staff and deacons, as well as other selected people, will be very helpful to you.

    1. What are the measurable outcome goals and do they correlate with the mission objective you are seeking to accomplish?

    2. Is this idea best suited for your area of responsibility or should someone else be appointed to lead it since it best fits his or her ministry area?

Plan

At this phase, the idea and its goals are clarified in a detailed written proposal. The proposal could be presented to the staff and elders for approval. Answers to the following questions can provide details for the proposal, specifically details about what implementing the idea would require.

    1. What is your biblical/theological justification for this ministry?

    2. How long will this take to implement and what is the time line for the phases necessary to implement it?

    3. Who will be responsible for it and how many hours will it require of them to launch and also oversee the ministry?

    4. How much will it cost, both to launch and maintain?

    5. How many volunteers will be needed and whom do you have in mind?

    6. What facilities will it require?

    7. What promotions will it require?

    8. What type of people are you anticipating will attend and/or participate?

    9. How will this require time and energy of the elders and deacons?

    10. How might this compete with and/or negatively impact other ministries?

    11. How can people pray for this ministry?

Implement

The idea has been justified, planned, and approved; it now needs to be launched as a reality. The plan needs to be executed and at this phase, the hard work begins in an effort to build momentum and make the idea a reality.

Manage

At this phase, the idea has become a new reality but shortly thereafter the ministry will likely lose momentum as the work becomes routine, the systems that were planned need to be upgraded for efficiency, and faithful people need to ensure the ministry continues forward and that the devoted people serving do not grow weary or lose heart.

In my limited experience in ministry I've seen this happen quite frequently. Perhaps we launch a new process for following up with first-time guest, or a new method for set-up/tear-down. It goes smoothly for the first couple months and then it begins to lose steam. The systems that you launch and manage have to be constantly upgraded and the glitches need to be corrected.

I like to relate "planting" new ministry's or beginning new ideas to a garden. In order for your garden to bear good vegetables, it needs to be watered, have insecticide, weeded, etc... or your garden will fail. The same is true with any new ministry that is launched. If you don't constantly "water" it. It will lose momentum and eventually fail.

Review

At the six-month and one-year marks of each ministry (as well as other designated times), the leader of that ministry must ensure that accurate and meaningful reviews are conducted to answer the following questions and determine if the ministry should continue, be changed, or cease.

    1. Have you met your objectives?

    2. Why or why not?

    3. Should this ministry continue?

    4. How can you improve?

    5. What changes must be made?

-Jake Sherron

This summer I am preforming and/or taking part of several weddings. In all the weddings that I preform I require pre-marital counseling. What I am learning, as I am doing these counseling sessions, is that I still have a lot to learn about marriage. I am learning that I am still a rookie and, although I have been married for almost 6 years, I am still new at it.

Through the years that Jes and I have know each other it has really been difficult to find older couples who love each other, keep the Gospel centered in their marriage, and fulfill their biblical roles as husband and wife. Therefore, it is hard for us to have a model to go by for what a Gospel-centered marriage looks like. I can only assume that other young couples have struggled finding this as well.

It is my desire to love my wife more each and everyday as we grow old together. I can only hope and pray for the grace of God to help us through the good and bad. Jes and I desire to be a couple that impacts other couples. We hope to show what the Gospel looks like in marriage. We pray that we can be that old couple that young couples will learn from.

This is a great video posted by the Resurgence on marriage. In this video, Mark Driscoll interviews Wayne and Margaret Grudem on questions about their marriage. Dr. Grudem is a Bible scholar and has written several great theological works such as his popular work on Systematic Theology. If you are married or thinking about marriage... you need to take some time and watch this. It brought tears to my eyes and helped me think through a better vision on what my marriage to Jes should look like.

Enjoy!

- Pastor Ben

God tells him to stop persecuting Jesus, not just the church. Consequently, God refers to Saul His "chosen instrument" that He will use to take the Gospel to the Jews and the Gentiles. Saul (whose name was later changed to Paul) lived a fearless life led by the Holy Spirit and planted many churches. The church at Corinth is one of the churches that Paul planted on his third missionary journey (Acts 18: 1-17).

Paul lived among the people at Corinth for eighteen months. He planted the church, raised up leaders and moved on to the next city. Shortly after Corinth he went to Ephesus. During his time in Ephesus he corresponded with members of the church at Corinth (1:11). Through this exchange Paul discovered a high level of tension in the church. Issues included: immature attitudes toward church leaders (4:1-21), bizarre sexual sins (5:1-5) and believers suing each other (6:1-11).

Some issues emerged from a failure to understand Paul's teachings. It is evident that Paul wrote several letters to the church at Corinth. We know for sure that he had written a previous letter (5:9) which was misinterpreted by the Corinthians. In that letter he was warning the Corinthians not to associate with immoral persons and they took this to mean ALL immoral persons, while he only was referring to immoral professing believers (5:10-13). Ironically, this portion of Paul's teaching is still misunderstood today!

Paul wrote the letter we know as1 Corinthians in order to clean up the misunderstandings of the church at Corinth. The letter was likely read by one of the church leaders at one of its corporate gatherings. Fortunately, all Scripture is inspired by the Holy Spirit of God and we can learn about Jesus and his church through the letter of 1 Corinthians.

Why Corinth?

Corinth today has little significance other than historical. During the time this letter was written (around A.D. 55) Corinth was composed of both Jews and Greeks (Acts 18:4). However, it is clear there were more Gentiles resided here because we see Paul reiterate his vision statement for his ministry, "From now on I will go to the Gentiles" (Acts 18:6; cf. 13:46).

From cities, culture emanates and influences surrounding regions. Corinth was a large, innovative, wealthy city. It was a port city located between the Aegean region and the western Mediterranean whereby goods from around the world were transported in and out. Thus it became the center for art, philosophy and religion. Corinth was widely monotheistic and contained a number of pagan temples including large ones to Apollo and Aphrodite. The worship of these gods was so ingrained in the culture of Corinth that it was apart of the governmental affairs, many of the cultural outlets and festivals, and consequently became apart of everyday life. Religion in Corinth could be compared to modern day Bangkok, Thailand. Here there are many trades, travelers, cultures, and displays of polytheism.

Practical Things to Know.

Since Corinth was a cosmopolitan city with a influx of new ideas, Paul had a mixed bag of opposition. On one hand he had over zealous Jews who had a legalistic approach to the Gospel, much like a modern day separatist. On the other hand he had to deal with the culture at large which carried an aggressive liberal approach to the Gospel which would have included an array of conflicting religions and philosophies.

.: missional :.

Right now we are going through a two week series entitled "missional". Over the last several years the term missional has become quite the buzz word in evangelical circles. Seemingly, there are many who grab buzz words and attach them to their church missions statement or core values without even considering or defining what these words or phrases actually mean. I, however, would like to clearly explain what missional means so that I am not guilty of doing the same thing. Rather than merely having the word included in our missions statement, I would prefer to see it played out in our church culture... that the people who make up our church know what it means and know how to live it out.

The basic characteristic of a missional church starts with the people. And what I mean by that is that a church is not simply creating an evangelistic program called "missional" and now we can be called a missional church. Rather, I think it has to come down to the people.

So, I think the real question is... are the people missional and how can we gage that? We can gage this by asking ourselves one question... "do our people, as a whole, care about the common good in our city and our world?"

To be missional is to live life as a missionary. A good missionary contextualizes the Gospel wherever he or she is placed. This means that the missionary understands the people of whom they are engaging with in the Gospel. The problem with many Christians is that we have an "us" and "them" mentality in regards to how we relate to those who do not know Jesus. Sometimes we have created such a subculture we often do not see the needs of those around us or even share the same concerns.

Jesus was the perfect example of what it means to live as a missionary. He "made himself nothing (or emptied himself), taking the form of a servant..." (Phil. 2:7). Jesus was often for the common good. Jesus' ministry was full of feeding the poor, healing the sick, causing the blind to see, etc. but he did so to display the beauty of the Gospel.

My good friend Winfield Bevins speaks further on this topic:

http://theresurgence.com/series/Missional_Christianity

So, when we talk about missional... I want us to pled with God to show us where we do not see the needs in our city and in our world. I hope we can display the Gospel of Jesus by the way we love those in our neighborhood, in our work place, in our schools, etc. Let us ask God to allow us see the world through the lens of the Gospel and not through the lens of cultural Christianity. Lord, help us be missional.
